as much as so many people will hate to hear this, i am not a practicing catholic. by that, i mean, i don't go to mass every sunday - in fact i usually only go on christmas. yes, i'm one of those. i would like to start going to church again - maybe not a catholic one - but i'm interested in the spiritual things... i digress.
while not practicing, i do like to take the season of lent to give up something and take on a personal challenge. this year, since i'm doing my happiness project too, i thought really taking lent seriously was important. yesterday was ash wednesday. i did not go to mass, but i determined what i am giving up for lent and i decided to tackle something that i hate to do: running.
this year, i am giving up meat for lent. this might be hard: i work at a steakhouse, and i LOVE a good burger. but i also recently went to restaurant depot, a huge bulk store for restaurants, and i saw up close and personal large chunks of meat and whole - i do mean WHOLE - goats and lambs, ready to be strung up on a kebab and slow cooked for hundreds of hungry hordes. it really bothered me. i've tried to go veg before, and it was tough. this time, i am going to go pescetarian.
as for the taking on a personal challenge, i do run - occasionally. i mean, really occasionally. more like i walk. even on the treadmill. but i have run in the past, and i have even done a race in the past. so i am making myself run for ten minutes every day. on the treadmill, outside, whatever. i will run. maybe run 5, walk, run 5 more, but i will RUN ten minutes every day. this gets me up to running for the trolley run in april, and even possibly a marathon this fall.
